For breakfast a “morning set” is often available which usually consists of juice, coffee, eggs and toast. These mom and pop businesses are gradually being replaced by the bigger chain shops such as Detour, Tully’s, and Starbucks, which offer over the counter coffee, more spacious seating arrangements, and in the case of Starbucks a no smoking environment. This has proven to be a big selling point in a nation that currently has very few restrictions in regard to smoking in public restaurants and bars.

Others have striven to develop a unique theme to distinguish themselves from the competition. Music coffee shops for example featuring jazz, classical, or rock, have always been a favorite hangout for the younger crowd since their inception in the early 1960′s. Less mainstream but proving to be quite popular are the manga (comic book) coffee shops that have sprung up in recent years in Tokyo. Andrew James Hymel is the owner, proprietor, and music director of Andy Hymel School of Music in Gretna, Louisiana, just outside of New Orleans. It is a success story that has blossomed from one man’s dream of music education into a consortium of teachers and students who strive for excellence and value the importance of the preservation of the arts in today’s New Orleans.

When asked about his Post Katrina experience, Hymel relied, “It was scary to reopen the school and it was like starting over, but I felt the community needed something to use as an outlet for the emotions caused by Katrina. We weren’t just rebuilding a music school; we were rebuilding the minds and souls of our students and their families.”

Andy Hymel earned a degree in Jazz Performance from Loyola

University in New Orleans, LA. At a young age, his musical talents developed from “jamming” with neighborhood musicians in the Algiers area, notably Frank Saucier, a regular solo artist at Kerry’s Irish Pub in the French Quarter. In the 80′s, he honed his guitar skills at the World’s Fair with the vocal group “Celebration” and is to this day appreciative of that opportunity.

While his music accomplishments were self-developed, his community involvement and business acumen were mostly inspired by his dad.

His father, Lloyd Hymel, is a pillar of the Algiers community and an elder of Saint Andrews the Apostle Church. He was Chairman of the West Bank Chamber of Commerce, President of the Petroleum Club and the West Bank Rotary Club, and Vice President of AMF Tuboscope in Harvey, Louisiana.

One of his brothers, Philip Hymel, is the Chief Financial Forecaster of Entergy New Orleans and recently served as President of the University of New Orleans Alumni Association. Another brother, David Hymel, is in the oil and gas business and for years organized the oil field “Chili Cook Off”; recently at Boomtown Casino and previously at Alvin Andrew Callender Naval Airforce Base in Belle Chasse, Louisiana.

Another brother, Greg, owned and operated a Zack’s Frozen Yogart franchise and is a Ginger Baker “Cream” style drummer. His is also an artist/painter and is displayed in several restauraunts in the New Orleans area. Obviously, the senior Mr. Hymel set a solid foundation for his children to excel in business and community development.

With that said, it is apparent that Andy Hymel has parlayed his strong family values and love of music instruction from a work at home business into a full blown, reputable, school of music.

Branching off from the security of working from home, Hymel first opened his school at 601 Terry Parkway in Gretna, LA, in an area commonly known as Terrytown. What started as a handful of students quickly blossomed into a full school of music with 280 students strong and has had to relocate to a larger building at 1800 Stumph Boulevard. Predominantly a guitar teacher, he also teaches piano and bass. His drum instructor, Jumpin’ Joe Gelini, graduated from Berklee School of Music in Boston, a great accomplishment considering only 2% of those who attend Berklee actually graduate. The school has a wide variety of teachers, including band directors and vocal coaches, covering several instruments and genres. Even Hymel’s high school guitar teacher from Holy Cross is on the payroll!

Mr. Hymel (not his dad Lloyd) believes that music education can start at the Pre-K level and has programs and original songs in place for the youngest of students. He also has courses geared for “Baby Boomers” as well.

In between those age groups, one of his most amazing accomplishments is that 5 of his students have received full scholarships to various schools of music and EVERY one of his 10 students who have applied to NOCCA was accepted on their first audition!

One former student begins as an understudy this fall with the Metropolitan Opera Association. Another, Alex Zander, is a published singer/songwriter. Alex is an entire story yet to be written. Stay tuned.

In addition to his accomplishments as a teacher and entrepreneur, he has written and recorded hundreds of original songs and his efforts are starting to be recognized. Most notably. the son of Clarenece “Frogman” Henry, marketing himself as Clarence “Frogman” Henry Jr. , is considering many of Hymel’s songs for his soon to be released CD.

For Andrew James Hymel this is only the start. As an unabashed Beatles fan, an admitted student of New Orleans music, and an unwavering ambassador of music education, the sky is the limit!

Preparing to audition for a part in a musical is daunting at best and petrifying at worst for those whose lives have not revolved around singing since early childhood. Some people just know music from having grown up around it. They seem to breathe it and it oozes out their pores. They know every song from every musical, even the obscure ones. At the least provocation they will start to belt out a song so appropriate to the moment that it’s scary, and on key too, hitting every single note. And they don’t seem to freeze up in the face of their audience either. While singing, they’re in their element.

Not everyone is blessed with such a natural command of the audio waves, or with such finely tuned vocal cords. Nor is everyone able to act natural and at ease in front of an audience while singing.

There’s no question that it’s fun to participate in a play, and many people are willing to have a smaller role in a community theater production. Many can shine in such a situation. But what about when the only production your school or local theater is planning is a musical, and you know your singing voice is less than angelic?

Perhaps you enjoy lifting up your voice in singing, but others ask you politely (or not so politely) to refrain from joining in so as not to ruin the song. Maybe even you as well as everyone else can hear your voice ***** or warble on many of the notes. And yet, you really want to be in the musical, and you don’t want to just do tech once again this year.

Here are some tips for how to handle this worrisome event.

Tip #1: Read the script. Know what the musical is about and know the characters. Choose a character to audition for that you are well suited to. The character should have your body type and (obviously) your gender. If you’re a large, hairy older male, don’t audition for the part of a slim, innocent teenage maiden.

Tip #2: Choosing your music. Choosing the right music to sing for the audition is of utmost importance. Usually, you don’t sing a song for the audition that is from the musical. Chose another piece of music. Choose one that is in your voice range, without too many high or low notes. You can choose any song, however, songs from other musicals often provide you with a platform to showcase your strong points. You can usually show a lot of expression and movement with them, and this will show your abilities even if your voice cracks. Songs from musicals are likeable and you can usually find the music for them.

Tip #3: When to start. Don’t wait to start preparing for the audition. Searching for the right music can be very time consuming. Sometimes the most important criteria for your choice is not how much you like the song, but whether the music is available!

Tip #4: Finding music for your song. Usually the casting director requires you to bring the music without lyrics on a CD or audiotape or the sheet music for piano. You can buy sheet music online, but you can also get it at a music store or in the music library of a local school. Many songs are available online for free as midi files, although the quality is not necessarily the best. Often you will only have 30-60 seconds to sing, so you can usually find just a portion of the music online, enough for one or two verses and one chorus. Download it, save it and burn it to CD or hook up your computer to your audiotape player and copy it to an audiotape.

Tip #5: Practice, practice, practice. There is no such thing as too much practice. Be sure you have the words memorized so that you never wonder what the next word is. Sing the song everywhere you go when you’re alone. Belt it out in the shower. Sing in the car. Practice with the music until you have it perfect to the note. Practice your hand movements, ****** expressions and actions too until they have become ingrained and you don’t have to think about them. Let the actions follow the words. Use your whole body to sing and sing from your belly, not from your throat.

Tip #6: Consider getting a voice coach. If you’re not a singer, this is a very good idea. A voice coach will help you improve your singing and your presentation considerably, and they will give you confidence.

Tip #7: Get a good night’s sleep. Go in to the audition rested, not frazzled and worried. Show your best side. Wear appropriate clothing.

Tip #8: Warm up your vocal cords. Before you sing your song at the audition, do all your usual voice warm-ups and more. Warm up your body, too, with stretching and movement.

Tip #9: Dealing with fear. Everybody is scared at an audition. Everybody really wants to get a part; so freezing up is not unusual. The casting director is aware of this. The very best thing you can do is to relax and allow spontaneity in your performance. Show your best side. Show your expressiveness and acting ability even when you know you’ve missed a note. And don’t sing quietly. Stage singers need to make their voices reach the farthest corner of the auditorium.

Tip #10: The actual audition. When you perform your song, forget all your practicing. Just be spontaneous. You know the material very well – now just have fun with it. If you make a mistake, just go right on. (Don’t stop in the middle and say “Oops” or “Sorry.” Be energetic. The casting director wants to see how well you can act as well as how well you can sing. Keep smiling. If you miss a note, or if your voice won’t obey what your mind tells it to do, just keep going and don’t look like you think you’ve made a mistake. And when you’re done, give a little bow and walk off the stage with confidence.

It is very rare for a singer, dancer or actor to be cast in a role on the strength of their first audition. Because there are literally thousands of performers looking for work, most musicals have a Recalls system that can be fairly lengthy. One UK client had to endure 9 recalls at her own expense before she got the part. This article takes you through the different stages of the audition process, and describes how a coach can support performers through the recall system.

I assume that you have gone through or sidestepped the preliminary stage of the audition process (the cattle call) and have successfully completed the first private audition.

You know from having got the recall that the casting director thinks you fit the part and are at the appropriate level for the production. They want to find out more about you and how you deal with the material in the show. They will usually give you music and script for the roles they want you to audition for.

If the production company haven’t given any music or instructions, but has asked you to sing your own choice for them again, my advice is NOT to take new songs “to show something different” but to polish the same songs that were sung in the first audition. I also recommend wearing the same outfit. It’s the song, the performance and the clothing that got you the recall, so why risk changing their minds?

During a coaching session for auditions, we focus on the song, the character and the story – what’s the package that we’re selling? This technique, used for first auditions with your own choice of song, can be applied to the recall. We’ll explore the songs the casting panel has provided, identify the style elements of the show and incorporate them into the song (and your voice). We will also categorize the character’s personality traits, and test different versions of the scenes and songs to bring a consistency to both the singing and speaking.

That’s the first major hurdle. But the second recall is different again. By this time you will probably have been given not just the music but also some clues or advice on how the company wants the character to be played. In coaching for the second recall, we might experiment with different readings of the song based on different subtexts. It’s essential during the second recall that the performer gives a clear reading, but can still stay flexible enough to change if required.

The third recall is usually a more flexible event. You now know that you are at the right level and appropriate for the role. Often in the third recall the director and musical director will work with you in detail. This is the time to listen and experiment! Occasionally other auditioning actors will be brought in to “match up” a potential cast. My coaching sessions for the third recall are much more focussed, using information and hints given by the panel.

For example, working on auditions for the musical Spring Awakening recently, one of my clients was looking at three different roles and had been given very specific instructions from the directors for all three songs. So we worked on more aggression and bite in the consonants for one character, a more fluid, lyrical feel with some musical style tweaks for the second, and a hypnotic, sexually dominant feel for the third.

Another client was working on recalls for Mamma Mia and was up for two of the three leading ladies. So we worked on the dialogue for each character, identifying and shaping the differences between the two roles, finding the essence of their speech patterns, speed of delivery, pitch range and characterisation. Then we carried those differences into the songs to give a complete, identifiable package for each of the leads.

By the time you get to the fourth, fifth or sixth recall, you will have a relationship with the casting panel, and they have more time to discuss what they want to experience from you. You should be able to find out if there are any weaknesses in your presentation, and what you can do about it. Experimentation is vital here so know your material!

Occasionally at this point, it’s less about you and more about the casting panel being in disagreement about what the role requires. Perhaps a show originates on Broadway and comes over to the West End (or vice versa). In these cases there is often an American casting contingent who might have very different ideas. Just stay calm and do what you do. Be prepared to change everything that you have done so far. Stay focussed and open, and listen very carefully to what you are being told. In the rare event that you receive conflicting information, follow the advice of the person with the highest authority!

And if you don’t get any further in this particular journey, remember that the casting panel in your country has already approved your performing and will remember you for other shows.

Auditioning for jobs is a fact of life for the actor singer dancer. Once you become more successful at singing auditions, casting directors start to see you in other roles and you can bypass the first stages of auditioning (although even for the stars auditioning never goes away – “Would you like to pop in for a chat and a little sing?”).

Landing a role in a Broadway show or getting a West End lead can be incredibly rewarding. Working the Recall System in this way can help you understand the process and get you there quicker.
